We Played Outside…while music played everywhere- Part 2

We Played Outside…while music played everywhere- Part 2

The prompt for today is:

What do you do to nourish your soul when you feel emotionally depleted?

Last night (Wednesday) was my daughter’s spring concert.  Yesterday’s post was about my childhood summers in Queens, NY

Today’s post is Part 2 to my Summer Lovin Days

Back in the day….as soon as the window shades flew up, the curtains or drapes were drawn and the windows were open music played everywhere

We listened to music with these:

 Radio/Cassette players

Or a radio curved and funky looking like the one above.

The kitchen had something like this, on a shelf above the table, that was always on –always playing the top pop songs of the 70’s

When I was 13 or 14, my musical idols were:

Sir Elton John

The beautiful Mr. Peter Frampton; and yes I had their posters in my room.

Music always played in my home and on the block, someone always had a portable radio playing somewhere and those rides I wrote about yesterday, those trucks would come down the block blasting the latest song.

When we were at the beach, everyone had a radio on his or her blanket and as I walked down to the water, I would always hear a snippet of a song playing.

Songs like The Tin Man, Silly Love Songs, Rock Me Gently, and Rich Girl….

Billboard 100 Number 1 Hits 1976

1976 Billboard 100 hits

The above link is the 1976 Billboard 100 Hits; it is 8 minutes of a years’ worth of the top songs from that year. I chose that year because I think even though I was listening to music before 1976; that was the year that I started developing my own taste in music.

Other bands were added to my list, bands such as:

Led Zeppelin

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/blogs/blog-on-the-tracks/2783592/Fleetwood-Macs-return-to-NZ

And Fleetwood Mac…I wanted to be Stevie Nicks, who didn't?

I am continuing with yesterday’s post by posting about music, because of three things:

Last night was Amelia’s spring concert – I love that my children are in chorus, the show choir, and play an instrument. It’s so cool to hear them sing the songs that both my husband and I listened to, (the oldies).  It is amazing that as tweens themselves they are developing their own palette to music.  Awesome!

The second reason I chose to write about music is that what I am sharing with you, is that this music is actually the soundtrack of my summers as a young girl.

My love of music continues to grow, I have an eclectic collection of songs and albums everywhere…from Louie Prima to Led Zeppelin – from Billie Holiday to Antonio Vivaldi…

I am cool because I listen to Led Zeppelin, I am refined because I love Mozart,  I love soundtracks like Mama Mia, Grease, and Frozen; even if  that makes me quirky I don’t care! I listen to Lorde, Eminem, and Imagine Dragons; so, does that make me relevant? Music does not stop after 40 my dears.

The third reason as I mentioned earlier is today’s prompt, which is:

What do you do to nourish your soul when you feel emotionally depleted?

I listen to music…

I don’t have one particular song there are so many, but lately I go back to the tried and true:
Enjoy!

Psst! Part three tomorrow.

How do you nourish your soul?

Until you've seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the lord
There's people out there like you
I thank the lord there's people out there like you

words by Bernie Taupin sung by Elton John

  1. love the blue curved funky one!
my mother also lived with music. it was the first thing on in the mornings.
one of my favorite memories is seeing my father ready for duty in his uniform and the two of them dancing on the screened in back porch... at breakfast time! talk about romantic!
love movie soundtracks and mellow jazz with a lonely sax.
also love puccini. brings me to tears ususally.
and elton john has never set a foot wrong! xo
but... truly... just reading a cozy english mystery in a quiet room does it for me when i'm depleted.
it takes me to cool and lovely england. that's what works for me.
    fun posts marisa!
