What's Cooking

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will work this morning, I was not able to see my latest post from SquareKat in the reader or on Bloglovin’ so annoying, arrgh!

Pasta with Chicken and Peas…
I promise I   will post the recipe soon …my whole family actually was quiet when they started eating this dish…first bite, everyone is quiet, then I heard Mmm…so good!

This post is a recap of what’s been cooking at Mangia, Mangia…No Talk! In addition, a reprieve for missing posting on  Friday and Monday and today…you see  I am participating in NaBloPoMo on Blogher….Wow I’m not going to lie its tough!

Lately juggling a job, two school schedules and the house has been fulfilling; LOL, said me never!

Roasted sweet potatoes – Peel Sweet Potatoes slice, or cut how you like them, yet make sure that they are even or close to the same size.  This way they cook evenly.  Place on a baking sheet season with a couple of pinches of seal salt and black pepper  sprinkle some olive,  and toss together with your clean hands in order to season and coat evenly ; place in the oven at 350 and bake or roast about  20- 25 minutes.

One of the things I do is make a menu for the week.  I do this by going through the weekly flyers in my area.  The supermarkets that are in my neighborhoods are Shop-Rite, Stop n Shop, Waldbaums, Walgreen's, Super Target, Path-mark, Trader Joe’s and Best Yet. I look for sales, but I don’t necessarily clip coupons (I should, but I don’t), I justify this lack of coupon interest because the items I do buy hardly have coupons.

These are my staples that I buy every week

Bread (sliced – for sandwiches)
Cold Cuts (Usually one like Chicken or turkey…for my daughter who doesn’t want to buy lunch)
Snacks for school
Italian Frying Peppers
Vidalia Onion or a Sweet Onion
Large cans of Sauce (4 or 5 cans)
A couple of boxes of Chicken Stock (low fat and low sodium)

I think that’s it

Then I add what I need: (If I need these, because these are the items I buy in bulk)
Any array of cleaning products
Toilet Paper
Paper Towels
Paper Plates and cups
Dog Food   

Next on the list are the ingredients to make the meals…so each day of the week I have a meal planned based on what I see in the flyer.  

My point is that my food bill each week adds up. At times I am averaging anywhere from $110-$124.00 a week. I’m not sure what that sounds like to everyone; to me that  sounds high  but I am feeding a family of four…I mean five counting Teddy.   My weekly food bill is most likely an accurate number on an average across the country but  realistically for the area I live in Long Island New York it’s probably lower than most families….Truthfully if you breakdown the number you can understand that  it is cheaper to plan meals each week and eat at home.

Friday – Tuna Salad – fries- salad - (green)

Saturday – Fun night – could be take out, homemade pizza, Mexican (homemade) Deli-Meat quesadillas, grilled cheese and soup – or Diner style cheeseburgers. Until next week’s flyer
