We are cooking up colors!

We are cooking up colors!

One Saturday afternoon we took all of our crayons and cooked them up.
This a great project with the kids; we had so many crayons so we decided to recycle them. Then we made goody bags for all of my children’s classmates and gave them out during the last week of school, last year!

We used this tool to remove the paper around the crayons!

We broke the crayons some more…then separated by colors.

I preheated the oven to 250 degrees.

We used two mini muffin tins…I sprayed them lightly with cooking spray.

James, Amelia and I filled each section with different color combination.

The picture above is dark I tried to lighten it but that didn't work, however, I think you can tell how we placed the crayons and combined different colors.

We used our imagination I did a combination of camouflaged crayons copying my sons shorts, we did a few with patriotic colors, red, white and blue, and combined many colors that looked good together.

The muffin tins went into the oven for about 7 – 10 minutes or until everything was melted.

Take out of the oven, let the tins cool, and allow the disks to harden for about five minutes.

When I first took them out of the oven, my first thought was; how do I get these out. It looked like they were not going to budge, but have no fear…. At some point during cooling off and hardening, I thought I saw the crayon/wax separate from the muffin tin, so I turned the pan upside down and banged on each cup, each disk popped out nicely! I just kept hitting the bottom of the muffin tins.

 These were the first batch!

 Then we made more!

Many more

Nick found one that looked like a bat…so he said!

The combination of colors are endless…love that!

This one looks like a face!

I found these packs of crayon gum, they came in a pack of three at the  Dollar Tree!

Each classmate got a box of crayon gum with 5 or 7 disks!

Amelia and James gave the goody bag of gum and crayons to their classmates last year wishing them all a wonderful summer, the labels were made on the computer!

It was a great afternoon project!!!!

Not sure if we are doing anything this year, the school now has restrictions, with candy, food and having parties!

But I’m sure we will think of something!

Mangia, Mangia…no talk!

  1. I imagine the kids loved their gifts!

  2. Yes they did like them and used them as well; my kids told me that some of the kids started drawing and coloring with them. :) made m feel good! Thanks for stopping by!!!!!

  3. What a fun project! Makes me want to go out and buy one of the big boxes of crayons again, but it's been many a year.

    1. Go out and buy yourself crayon, I have crayon, regular ones and these twister kind, sharpies, pastels, and pencils ...I don't draw but doodle daughter thinks I know how!

  4. Marisa, Wow!!!! Its posts like this when I wish I had kids to play with.. What a fun project.. and as for me? I need to keep trying.

    1. Yes keep trying... But get yourself a box of crayons, very house needs one they lots of fun! The creativity will flow!

  5. BRILLIANT!!! and what a fun process to watch!
the only melted crayons i've ever seen were on a car trip.
we were just kids in the back seat... the marine and i...
we had been 'coloring in coloring books' to pass the time. we put our crayons in the back window. the sun did the rest.
my father not nearly as happy as the recipients of your wonderful art project!!! LOL. ruined the car. :(

    1. It was a lot of fun to do with the kids and it inspired me to do another crayon project that had us all playing a sidewalk game that both my husband and I played on our city streets in the summer when we were young. I love the connect the dot process will post about that soon!....oh boy about your dad's car; I'm sure in all of its damage or ruin there was some beauty to it. Enjoy your day!!!!!

  6. Hi Marisa,

Poppy here, a year later! Your creativity with crayons is contagious! If I had little ones, I'd be baking up a storm! Love all the rainbow hues and how you packaged them for presents; how sweet you are!
